Eurice Project PneumoNP Has Reached the Finish Line
When the PneumoNP consortium gathered for the first time for the Kick-off Meeting in San Sebastian in January 2014, they were greeted by a winter storm. Almost four years later, when the consortium met again for their final get-together at the same place on November 23-34, 2017, they were surprised by sunshine and late summer temperatures.
The external conditions were therefore perfect for the 3rd and final Review Meeting that was hosted by PneumoNP’s coordinator CIDETEC. With another 1.5 months to go until the project end, the consortium took the opportunity to present their preliminary results with regard to their search for safer and more efficient antibiotics to the EC Project Officer Heico Frima and the external reviewer María Blanco Prieto who have followed the project throughout its lifetime. To reach the project’s ambitious goal, PneumoNP worked with a new method of coupling antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) with so-called nanocarriers. At the 3rd Review Meeting, PneumoNP presented the results obtained in the in vitro testing where the antibacterial activity and genotoxicity of free AMPs and AMPs in nanocarrier form were evaluated. The most promising combinations were selected for further studies in animal models. The tests with regard to the therapeutic effects of the selected combinations in rats are still ongoing, but it already became clear that the tolerability of the antibiotics in rats increases when using antibiotics associated to nanocarriers.
At the end of the 3rd Review Meeting, Heico Frima and María Blanco Prieto stressed the excellent cooperation in the project and, although the results are not be conclusive yet, they were considered very promising and useful as a basis for further research in the field.
The 3rd Review Meeting was connected to the Molecular Imaging Workshop (MIW2017) organised by PneumoNP partner CIC biomagune. A special session was dedicated to research done in PneumoNP with regard to imaging. This 2nd PneumoNP workshop comprised a key note by PneumoNP’s External Advisory Board member Prof. Jose Bengoechea and three presentations by PneumoNP members Marco Marradi (CIDETEC), Rene van Nostrum (Universiteit Utrecht) and Unai Cossio (CIC biomagune), award winner for the best presentation in this session.
Eurice is involved in PneumoNP as the management partner and contributes to the successful implementation of the project goals.
