2nd PneumoNP Progess Meeting held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands

One year into the project, on January 22 – 23, 2015, John Hays of ERASMUS MC and his team welcomed the PneumoNP consortium to the premises of ERASMUS MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, for the project’s 2nd Progress Meeting. The vibrant melting pot of Rotterdam constituted the perfect stage for vivid discussions among the eleven European partners in the consortium.

The meeting started with a presentation by Wil Goessens of ERASMUS MC on antibiotic resistance and the problems the world is facing at present with more and more bacteria being resistant to available antibiotics. Since PneumoNP’s focus is on finding alternative solutions for the treatment of infections with antibiotics, the consortium got to the core of the matter from the start. The following 1.5 days were dedicated to the progress made so far and particularly to discussing the way forward. Preparations have been made for the in vivo studies that are scheduled to start in July 2015. In this regard, an aerosol system has been developed and experiments have been carried out with nanocarriers as well as antimicrobial peptides. These will now be tested in combination and, finally, six nanosystems will be selected for the studies.

Iraida Loinaz from PneumoNP’s coordinating institution CIDETEC encouraged the consortium to work hard in the upcoming six months as they will be decisive for the further implementation of the project.

Starting the studies will coincide with the 1st Review Meeting scheduled for July 8, 2015 in Brussels, Belgium where the project’s progress will be presented to the EC.

PneumoNP is a 4-year collaborative project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. It aims to develop a theragnostic system for the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections in lungs.

Eurice is involved in PneumoNP as the management partner and contributes to the successful implementation of the project goals.
