ComplexINC finishing strong – 6th and final progress meeting & exploitation workshop in Berlin

The ComplexINC project saw its final Progress Meeting & Exploitation Workshop on 28th and 29th September 2015. The partners gathered, at Eurice’s Berlin office, to present their final project results and gain first-hand insight into the invited speakers’ large experience with the exploitation of research results. Imre Berger, ComplexINC Coordinator, and Ismail Moarefi Joint Coordinator, warmly welcomed this international high-tech consortium, especially the junior researchers invited to this final meeting for presenting their contributions, and the invited speakers, Dr Jürgen Bauer, EMBLEM, and Prof. Dr Burghardt Wittig, founder of Mologen AG and Chair, Foundation Institute Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, Free University Berlin.

On the first day of the meeting, all partners provided an emphatic summary of their research activities over the past four years as well as their overall achievements and contributions towards the successful fulfillment of the project’s objectives in time and budget. “The incredible joint commitment of the consortium over the years and their absolute determination to make this project a success, were essential to meet the ambitious project objectives and reach all our goals” Imre says. “Their tremendous efforts were also reflected in the outstanding external project evaluation we received by the EC in the spring of this year.”

Eight junior researchers presented their entertaining two minute paper-clips showing personal research highlights. The following poster session lead to animated discussions among all attendees.

The second day of the meeting was exclusively reserved for the Exploitation Workshop, and the Consortium was delighted to welcome two excellent guest speakers. Dr Jürgen Bauer, Deputy Director of EMBLEM, EMBL’s technology transfer subsidiary focusing on exploitation of research results and IPR, was first to take the stage. Dr Bauer compared the pros and cons of different ways to exploitation, notably licensing and founding start-ups. Prof. Burghardt Wittig, founder and former CEO of Mologen AG, then provided a captivating keynote of this pioneering cancer immunotherapy start-up, vividly picturing the long, occasionally thorny, but always exciting road of transferring research outcomes successfully from bench to bedside as an entrepreneur.

“It was a great pleasure to welcome these outstanding guest speakers to our workshop. Their deep insight and experience will be instrumental in guiding partners to choose the right way for exploiting their ComplexINC project results”, concludes Ismail Moarefi and adds: “It may be goodbye for now, but all of us agree that it would be fantastic indeed if we continued working together as a team in a new EC H2020 project!”
