EuNetAir – successful network on developing cheaper and energy efficient sensors – comes to an end

The COST Action EuNetAir – European Network on New Sensing Technologies for Air-Pollution Control and Environmental Sustainability has established a successful network of European spin-offs, SMEs, agencies, research centres and universities being in charge of air quality control in Europe’s future smart cities.

25 spin-offs and SMEs have been directly involved in producing sensor materials and devices using nanotechnologies, including advanced methods for odour monitoring. These SMEs researched new environmental measures, new technical standards and business models as well. Siemens as industry partner provided the industry’s view on indoor quality concerning the urgent need of accurate and cost-effective sensors for practical applications. In Addition, the COST Action has collaborated with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Air Quality Management, the EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and meteorological agencies in Italy, Hungary and Norway. EuNetAir has supported the European Sensor Systems Cluster (ESSC), a pan-European network of experts trying to enhance collaboration among sensor-systems applications experts which was launched by the EC in 2014.

From October 05 – 07, 2016, the final meeting of EuNetAir was hosted by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague and focussed on New Sensing Technologies for Air Quality Monitoring. About 40 speakers presented their work on different topics, amongst others applications of air quality sensors & environment quality, smart sensors for urban air monitoring in cities and expert comments for the revision of the Air Quality Directive. Fruitful discussions followed each presentation and all participants had the chance to provide further insights and share their thoughts and questions. In addition, 15 posters on New Technologies and Methods for Environmental Monitoring were prepared and displayed in the conference area.

"I am very proud to have created and linked this international S&T network with top experts. We’ve achieved a lot through our scientific discussions, technological proofs of concepts, joint exercises, inter-comparisons, training schools, and best practice exchanges, to name a few. And, just as important, a European network of friends emerged!”, says Dr Michele Penza from ENEA, COST Action Chair. The EuNetAir final meeting concluded with the collection of ideas and thoughts for future initiatives to continue the established network collaboration.

Eurice is Grant Holder of the COST Action EuNetAir and supports the network by applying financial, administrative and coordinating services for a successful implementation of the COST Action.
