EURICE Expertise at EIT Health Summer School on Digital Innovation in Diabetes Care

From August 28 - September 1, 2017, the second part of InnoDiaCare - the EIT Health Summer School on Digital Innovation in Diabetes Care – was held at the CECAD (Cologne Cluster of Excellence in Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases) at the University of Cologne. The first part of the InnoDiaCare EIT Health Summer School had been held at the Medical University of Łódź from July 2-7, 2017.

The InnoDiaCare EIT Health Summer School was initiated by the Medical University of Łódź in cooperation with the University of Cologne, Air Liquide Sante Internatinational, IESE Business School, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Profil GmbH, and Eurice. Further contributors to the Summer School were speakers from Bayer AG, Roche Pharma and Miltenyi Biotech GmbH.

The Summer School’s programme empowered students to develop new business ideas related to realistic diabetes care scenarios. Mentors from pharmaceutical companies, healthcare, research and business consulting guided the students to adopt an entrepreneurial attitude and develop their very own proposition of digital product solutions for people with diabetes.

The hands-on entrepreneur sessions where complemented by a range of interdisciplinary lectures on topics such as the biology of aging and diabetes, academic clinical trial organisation, entrepreneurial and translational research, personalised healthcare, costumer involvement in product development, managing innovation in health care, market analysis and academic self-assessment.

On behalf of Eurice, Jakob Haardt (Research & Innovation Manager) and Michele Dubbini (IP & Innovation Advisor) introduced the students to the topic of innovation management and IP protection. The students were given an introductory lecture on IPR and IP management and possible protection scenarios for their innovation. With the gained insights, the students were mentored in the development of a sound innovation management strategy by using the Innovation Model Canvas, a specifically designed Eurice tool to assess and monitor the innovation potential and capacity of collaborative research and development endeavours. The results were used to prepare the students for their final pitch in front of a jury from academia and business.

The Summer School is partnering with the CLOSE Project which contributed real-life diabetes care scenarios and expertise of academia and industry. Together with EIT Health Campus and Accelerator, the CLOSE partnership will guarantee a sustainable follow-up of the students' most excellent business ideas. As a project partner of CLOSE, Eurice supports the project in all aspects related to project management, project exploitation, IP management and communication.
