New Horizons for environmental and energy technologies

The workshop on Horizon 2020 in the field of environmental and energy technologies joined the ranks of a series of specialised workshops under the auspices of "Route 2020". Route 2020 is the information campaign of the Saarland on the new framework programme for research and innovation of the European Union (Horizon 2020).

Regional SMEs, research institutes, academia and local authorities attended the event hosted by Eurice and Saarland University in collaboration with the Institute for Future Energy Systems (IZES gGmbH).

After a short introduction round, Bernard Wern, department head for mass flow of IZES gGmbH, gave technical insights into the important role of bioenergy and its research potential in today's environment. His speech was followed by a general overview on the funding opportunities in Horizon 2020 for energy and environment related research presented by Jörg Scherer, Managing Director of Eurice GmbH. As the event mostly addressed regional players, Patrick Rosar of saar.is, a company offering consulting, qualification, technology transfer and innovation support to regional small and medium sized enterprises, showed regional funding possibilities for research and innovation projects. Last but not least, two representatives of the Aston University, Birmingham, presented tips and tricks for Horizon 2020 proposals in bioenergy, biomass and waste as well as collaboration possibilities with the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) of Aston University. The University is partner in the BioenNW project coordinated by IZES gGmbH on delivering local bioenergy to North-Western Europe (http://bioenergy-nw.eu/).

The participants and the speakers used the social gathering at the end of the workshop to network and to formulate first ideas for research projects. In all, it was a successful event providing both useful information and the basis for future collaborations.
