Stakeholder Workshop in Brussels Marks the End of FP7 Project CUPESSE

Insights into the causes and consequences of youth unemployment in Europe

With the project approaching its end on 31 January, the consortium of FP7 project CUPESSE gathered one last time for its final meeting on 25-26 January 2018. The interdisciplinary research project aims to assess the role of families, educational institutions and politics on young people’s education and career choices and their paths towards economic self-sufficiency.

Being responsible for the project management and dissemination activities within CUPESSE, Eurice hosted this final meeting in Brussels.

The first day of the meeting focussed on sharing the project’s findings regarding the causes and consequences of youth unemployment and the effectiveness of relevant policy measures with a wider audience.

Project coordinator Jale Tosun was pleased to welcome all project partners and external guests: the EC Project Officer Georgios Papanagnou, the Portugese Secretary of State of Employment Miguel Cabrita, Rick Hoyle (Duke University, USA), Alexa Meyer-Hamme (Bertelsmann Foundation, Barcelona), Stephan Thalhofer (Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Brussels), Judit Kalman (Hungarian Academiy of Science, Budapest), Christine Meiser (European Youth Parliament, Germany), Karel Havlíček (Association of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, Czechia), Lucie Susova (SOLDAR, Brussels), Paolo Graziano (Bocconi University, Italy), Romain Boitard (Delegation of the EU to Montenegro), Patricio Pérez Pacheco (International Secretariat of the FECCOO, Spain), and Antonio García (European Commission). CUPESSE Academic Advisory Board members Michael Camasso, Radha Jagannathan, and Stella Ladi also joined the meeting.

The workshop, "Youth (un-)employment in post-crisis Europe" included five sessions:

  • The Supply Side of Youth (Un)Employment – The Youth's Perspective
  • Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment
  • Long-term effects of unemployment on young adults
  • Policy Responses to promote youth employment
  • Politics meets Practice: Youth Employment Politics and Practice in Spain

In each session, one CUPESSE partner presented findings generated from the project which were followed by critical reflections from scientists and practitioners, and closed with an open discussion. The closing remarks were given by Miguel Cabrita and Georgios Papanagnou, with discussions and exchanges between the stakeholders and researchers continuing on during the reception that followed the end of the meeting.

The consortium meeting on the second day was used to discuss joint publications and future cooperation and to plan the final deliverables and reporting. Although the project has now come to its official end, the connections and networks forged during the last four years are sure to result in continued collaboration on the topic.
