NutriLOC takes a locally driven approach to improving the prevention and treatment of child malnutrition by developing a new generation of ready-to-use therapeutic and supplementary foods, as well as locally adapted fortified supplements. These products will be designed to be nutritionally adequate, non-dairy, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable, while making greater use of ingredients that are locally available in African countries. The project will explore conventional ingredients such as fish, legumes and cereals alongside emerging protein-rich sources, including spirulina and mycoprotein. By linking product development with local production and supply chains, NutriLOC aims to make effective nutrition solutions more accessible while strengthening regional food systems and economies. At the same time, the project will generate evidence to support the integration and scale-up of these solutions through national nutrition programmes, helping to foster more equitable and self-reliant approaches to malnutrition management.
