Advancing Responsible Electronics Through Strategic Portfolio Engagement

How can Europe reduce the environmental footprint of electronic technologies while strengthening its technological sovereignty? This question is at the heart of the Responsible Electronics portfolio under the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Challenge—bringing together leading research endavours, including our SUPERLASER project, to rethink how electronics are designed, produced and brought to market.

This collaboration recently took centre stage at the portfolio’s annual meeting, held on 5–6 February 2026 and hosted by Grenoble INP UGA. Bringing together project partners, policy representatives, researchers and innovators, the two-day event provided a platform for scientific exchange, strategic discussion and ecosystem building—further aligning ongoing efforts with the broader objectives of the EIC Pathfinder Challenge.

Within this framework, the EURICE Group actively contributes to the portfolio, engaging in the working groups on Outreach and Dissemination and Intellectual Property Management. Through this involvement, we support the strategic positioning of the portfolio, foster collaboration across projects, and contribute to the development of robust exploitation pathways—connecting scientific excellence with industrial relevance.

Curated by Isabel Obieta Vilallonga, Programme Officer at the European Innovation Council, the scientific programme placed the portfolio’s technical work within a broader strategic perspective. Contributions from researchers and policy representatives highlighted the key conditions required to translate Responsible Electronics from research ambition into industrial transformation.

Invited speakers included Leo Kenny (IRDS Sustainability Group), Antonio Facchetti (Northwestern University), Fernando Coelho (Joint Research Centre of the European Commission) and Jérôme Gavillet (IAM I Policy Office). Together, they addressed the scientific, regulatory and policy dimensions shaping the future of sustainable electronics.

From Research to Market: The Deep Tech Challenge

A central highlight of the meeting was the round table on the commercialisation of deep technologies in responsible electronics. Representatives from four Grenoble-based startups—Grapheal, Elephic, BeFC and Nellow—shared their experiences in bringing sustainable innovations to market.

Emerging from research and university environments, these companies exemplify the strength of Europe’s innovation pipeline. Their technologies are built on non-toxic and abundant materials, improved recyclability and circular production models—demonstrating that environmental sustainability and technological performance can go hand in hand.

At the same time, the discussion revealed persistent structural challenges. Investment decisions are still largely driven by expectations of rapid returns and scalability, with sustainability rarely acting as a primary driver. Manufacturers often prioritise cost over environmental impact, while the benefits of sustainable components remain largely invisible to end users due to their position deep within complex supply chains.

Bridging this gap between responsible innovation and market uptake remains a critical challenge.

The discussions underscored the need for stronger alignment between policy ambition, financing mechanisms and industrial demand. They also highlighted the importance of strategic dissemination, intellectual property positioning and early-stage exploitation planning in enabling market adoption.

Advancing sustainable electronics requires more than technological breakthroughs. It requires coordinated action across research, policy, investment and industry to move from promising innovation to real-world impact.
