The Community for Educational Innovation (CEI) has published a report examining how higher education institutions and research organisations translate research results into societal and economic value through knowledge valorisation.
Knowledge valorisation is described as the process of turning knowledge into social and economic value by connecting different fields and sectors and transforming research results, data, and expertise into products, services, solutions, and policies, according to the report. This process is positioned as central to moving from research to impact within higher education.
A coordinated, institution-wide approach is identified as a key condition for effective knowledge valorisation. Fragmented or project-based activities create gaps in awareness, coordination, and access to support, as highlighted in the report. It points to the need for institutional strategies that provide consistent and visible pathways for researchers to engage in valorisation.
Support structures play an important role in enabling the translation of research into use. Functions such as intellectual asset management, partnership facilitation, and support for the dissemination and application of knowledge are part of this process. However, their effectiveness depends on how well they are integrated across the research lifecycle.
Collaboration with non-academic stakeholders and capacity building are also identified as necessary conditions for knowledge valorisation. Challenges related to governance, incentives, and skills continue to limit engagement, and the report underlines the need to strengthen competences and organisational conditions that support activities beyond academia.
The publication provides insights and recommendations for higher education institutions, research organisations, and policymakers seeking to strengthen knowledge valorisation practices and improve the translation of research into practical outcomes.
