Full Title Sustainable 4D hydrogels functionalised with plant-based nanoparticles for bone regeneration in cancer patients

Description

Medical-related-osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare, but severe side effect of bone-targeting agents (BTAs), such as bisphosphonates, prescribed to survivors of breast cancer where they reduce the risk of secondary bone cancer. MRONJ entails the progressive destruction of the jawbone, which leads to frequent infections, inability to eat and risk of malnutrition. Current MRONJ treatment focuses on controlling infection, pain and bone death through long courses of antimicrobial agents, contributing to development of antimicrobial resistance. Currently, there are an estimated 6000 cases per year in Europe, with rising numbers expected.

GreenNanoBone sets out to develop and validate a novel MRONJ prevention and treatment approach by producing sustainable, biocompatible, bioactive and antimicrobial 4D material that promotes bone and tissue regeneration. The hydrogel is derived from plant-based food waste and will be injected or 3D printed. AI will be used to refine the properties of the developed materials. The goal is to test the materials in pre-clinical models, develop GMP-like production standards and produce up to 20 L of hydrogel to GMP standards. By the end of the project, the products shall be ready for Phase I clinical trials.

Aside from addressing the urgent clinical need, GreenNanoBone aims to develop a sustainable manufacturing process using recycling and clean raw material from food (potato) waste side streams.
